Sumac Saffron Spritz
An aromatic and mildly tart refresher with sumac, saffron, and cardamom flavors, finished with a splash of club soda.
Ingredients
- 3-5 saffron strands, plus extra for garnish
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 green cardamom pod, lightly crushed
- 1 tablespoon ground sumac
- 3/4 cup chilled club soda or water
- Ice
Instructions
- Grind the saffron strands with 2 tablespoons of sugar to a fine powder using a mortar and pestle.
- In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, combine 1 cup of water, sugar, crushed cardamom, and powdered saffron mixture, and bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
- Remove from the heat and stir in the ground sumac. Cover the saucepan and let it steep for 30 minutes.
- Strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer over a medium bowl and chill before serving.
- Fill a tall glass with ice.
- In a large pitcher, stir the syrup with chilled club soda or water.
- Pour 1 cup of the drink into the glass.
- Garnish with a few saffron strands.
- Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
