Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz vodka
  • 2 oz mandarin juice
  • 1/2 oz spiced shiso syrup
  • 1/4 oz lemon juice
  • 1 shiso leaf or star anise pod (garnish)
  • 10 large shiso leaves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise pod
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Toast the cinnamon stick and star anise in a separate pan over low heat until fragrant, being careful not to burn them.
  3. Add the toasted spices into the simple syrup, remove from heat, and let it come to room temperature. Once cooled, remove the cinnamon and star anise.
  4. Blanch the shiso leaves in boiling water for 15 seconds, then transfer them to a bowl of ice water. Pat dry and set aside.
  5. Blend the simple syrup and shiso leaves in a blender for about 1 minute, then strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove any bits.
  6. In a shaker, combine vodka, mandarin juice, spiced shiso syrup, and lemon juice. Fill with ice and shake for 10 seconds.
  7. Double strain the mixture into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with a shiso leaf or star anise pod.
